inside mount blinds and shades
Inside Mount

Inside mounting your blinds and shades can give you a "built-in" appearance after it is installed. Be aware of obstacles such as cranks and handles that can interfere with the operation of the blinds. If you have that problem, then we recommend outside mounting.

Inside Depth

Each product has a different headrail system for operating the blind or shade. The size of the headrail varies from product to product and the depth of your window must meet the minimum depth for inside mount. If you want your blind or shade to be flush mounted, then you will need to review the Depth Chart at the bottom of the page for minimum and flush mounting requirements.

Inside Diagonal

Your window must be square for your blind or shade to function properly. Measure the widow diagonally in two directions. If your measurements are different by more that 1/2", then you should not inside mount.

Inside Width

Measure the width inside your window on the top, middle and bottom. Write down the shortest of the three measurements. This is your width to order.

The factory makes a small automatic "inside mount" fit deduction from your ordered width. You do not need to calculate any width deductions yourself when ordering.

Inside Length

Measure the vertical length inside your window on both sides and in the middle. Write down the longest of the three measurements. This is your length to order. You don't want to add extra inches to the length. The blind will bunch at the bottom and look unprofessional. You want the bottom of the blind or shade to just "kiss" the bottom of the window sill.

Outside Mount

Outside mounting of your shades and blinds simply means mounting directly on the window casing (molding) or on the wall. Outside mounting can be the only option on windows that lack sufficient depth for inside mounting. You can make a window look larger with outside mounting and you can achieve increased room darkening qualities by extending the shade a few inches beyond the casing.

Two Direction Measuring

Measure the outside casing to outside casing for the width. You can add extra width to your measurement if you want to completely cover the sides casings with the blind or increase room darkening.

Then measure from the top of the casing to the sill. This is your length measurement. If you don't have a window sill, measure 1" past the bottom of the apron.

Casing (Moulding) Mount

Measure the width at the top of the casing as shown in the diagram. For nearly all blinds and shades, you can add extra width to the casing measurements to cover the side casings or increase room darkening. On wood and faux wood blinds, you can only add a maximum of 1/2" to the casing-to-casing width. The brackets are mounted on the outer edge of the casing and anything beyond an extra 1/2" will not give you enough space for the mounting screws. If you are wall mounting, this limitation can be ignored.

For length, measure from the top of the casing to the sill. You don't want to add extra inches to the length. The blind will bunch at the bottom and look unprofessional. You want the bottom of the blind or shade to just "kiss" the window sill. If you don't have a window sill, extend the shade 1" past the apron.

Wall Mount

You can mount all blinds and shades on the wall. If you are looking to make you window appear larger, increase room darkening or avoid drilling into decorative window casing. Mounting above the window casing also reduces the effects of stacking when the shade or blind is in the fully open position. You may require extension brackets if you need to clear cranks or decorative window casing.

Measure from the sill up to the desired high point on the wall above your casing. This is your length measurement. Remember, you want the bottom of the blind or shade to just "kiss" the window sill. If you don't have a sill, you want the shade to drop down about 1" past the apron so it is not visible when the shade is in the closed position.

Valance Specifications
All of our wood blinds come with a matching valance made of the same material as the blind slat. The valance covers the mechanical headrail and adds a fantastic finished look to the product. When you order your blind as an outside mount, the valance will come with returns specified below to cover the sides of the mechanical headrail. An inside mounted headrail will not come with returns. If you order an inside mount blind, make sure the mechanical headrail can recess completely in the window so its sides are not visible.

Headrail & Bottom Rail Dimensions
In this table we provide the dimensions of the headrails for each wood blind size. This information will tell you if your window depth will allow for an inside mount. For example, a 2" wood blind has a headrail that is 2-1/4" deep. Although you can inside mount this blind with a minimum of 3/4" depth, we recommend that you have an additional 3/4" or a total depth of 3" to achieve a good inside flush mount.

Approximate Stacking Height by Blind Length
Stacking occurs when the blind is pulled to the open position. All of the wooden slats are "stacked". The longer the blind the more slats there are to stack. The chart below provides the approximate total stacking height when the blind is in the full open position. An inside mounted blind will have the total amount of the stack in the window. An outside mount will reduce the stack in the window by the number of inches it is mounted above the window.

Ladder Charts
Window Blind Ladders are the strings or tapes that run through the slats to raise and lower the blind. The number of ladders across the blind depend on the product and the width. The number of ladders increase as the blind gets wider to support the weight.

Multiple Blinds On One Headrail
If you have a group of two or three windows together, we recommend you opt for the Multiple Blinds on One Headrail. Extra wide and long wood single blinds can be difficult to raise and lower. Splitting the binds will distribute the weight better and make daily operation much easier. Between multiple windows there is typically a molding dividing the individual windows. The split should be centered on the dividing molding. Since the blinds all remain on the same headrail the finished product preserves a single blind look. If you opt for a single wood blind over 72" wide, the repair warranty will no longer apply.

Fabric Tape
Fabric tape in a variety of different colors is available for 2" blinds. Fabric tape gives the blinds a designer look and can bring a "pop" color into the room. The tape replaces the ladder strings.
